MDRU SC 96 – Spectral Geology Workshop

Introduction
This workshop is designed to provide geologists and geochemists of all levels of experience and seniority with a comprehensive understanding of the applications of spectral geology in mining and exploration. In particular, it should provide participants with an understanding of the value of rapid, reliable mineralogy and how to implement spectral geology in their own operations.
Key concepts to be discussed include:
1. Introduction to Spectral Geology: What is it and what does the data mean? Why is it useful?
Basic theory of infrared (IR) spectral analysis, covering a full background so that all participants can understand what we are detecting in the IR data, and what information can be extracted from the spectra. Discussion of what minerals can and cannot be detected using this technology.
2. In depth Spectral Geology: What other information can we detect in the IR data and why is it important?
Presentation on the specific mineral characteristics that can be detected in the spectral data and how we can detect variations in different mineral groups. Discussion of why these are important for analysis of alteration in different alteration systems.
3. How to collect the best spectra: Tips and recommendations.
A discussion of the key factors for collecting good quality spectra and how to set up a good measurement workflow. Suitable for all hand held spectrometers including TerraSpec, oreXpress and the PS series.
4. The aiSIRIS interpretation solution: Accurate data, better decisions.
A discussion of the new aiSIRIS interpretation system and why it is important for the take up of spectral geology in the industry. What the aiSIRIS results mean and how to use the data in a practical way.
5. Case study examples: Typical problems and their solutions. Examples of successful application of spectral geology and the aiSIRIS outputs to exploration and mining.
Speaker Bio:
Dr Sasha Pontual, a leading expert in spectral geology, is the MD and founder of AusSpec, a spectral geology solutions company founded in 1992. AusSpec has developed and sells the aiSIRIS cloud-based spectral interpretation solution to minex companies that want to use hand-held spectrometer data as an input into their alteration modelling. An increasing number of companies are adopting the system across their operations because of the game-changing effect of having fast, standardised, and accurate mineralogical data. AiSIRIS is the realisation of Sasha’s desire to make spectral geology accessible to all geoscientists and embodies 25+ years of experience providing field-based mineral analysis services to the industry. Sasha was one of the first independent consultants working in providing spectral analysis services to the minex industry globally. In the last 25 years, she has created and delivered numerous training workshops to the industry, to most of the major companies, and has played an important part in the industry take up of the technology.
